Tristan Parker has lived in Fort McMurray since 1997 and has deep roots in the community going back to early elementary school. While Tristan didn’t participate in many sports throughout his school years, at 19 he was introduced to Jiu-Jitsu by a close friend. After his very first class he was hooked. Tristan went from being an unathletic and inexperienced student to a determined and competitive athlete in a very short period of time.

From that day until now, he continues to work to improve every day, resulting in success at multiple belt levels throughout the grappling circuit. You can trust that Tristan has the experience and technical understanding to teach not just youth and beginners, but also those looking to compete at a high level.

Tristan received his black belt from Marcelo Garcia in November 2022.

CO-OWNER & HEAD INSTRUCTOR

Scott Campbell

Fort McMurray’s first Jiu-Jitsu black belt, with a commitment to coaching the next generation.

Scott Campbell, being native to Fort McMurray, knows how far this community has come and aims to bring it even further. Inspired after his first experience watching MMA, he decided to join martial arts, and his first experience with Jiu-Jitsu was a humbling one. Growing up playing minor hockey in the community and football with the Fort McMurray Trappers, he decided to test himself in the dojo in 2009, where he was swiftly taught a humbling lesson by a man half his size.

He knew right then and there that he had to learn the secret of Jiu-Jitsu. Fast forward 10 years: after tirelessly training day in and day out, winning first place and absolute championship belts in numerous provincial grappling competitions, and working with dozens of MMA fighters from across the country, Scott earned his Jiu-Jitsu (Gracie Humaita) black belt under Professor Rodrigo Munduruca. He was the first in Fort McMurray to earn a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu.

He looks forward to continuing his Jiu-Jitsu path, coaching the future of this amazing community.

Christine Unruh

Youth instructor and 2026 World Masters silver medallist at brown belt, Master 3, who values confidence, empathy and continual learning.

“Home is where the heart is.” Having lived in Fort McMurray as a teen, Christine moved back in 2012 to be closer to her family. She began her Jiu-Jitsu journey in 2013 and quickly came to realise that she had found the sport to be extremely character building. From empathy to confidence, determination to mindfulness, Jiu-Jitsu has challenged her as a person and continues to shape her into an athlete she never thought herself capable of becoming.

Christine has tested herself in competition, either winning or learning. She earned five medals as a white belt and six as a blue belt, including two golds at Submission Ace and the Alberta Provincials in 2016.

Notable achievement

  • 🥈IBJJF World Masters Championship · Brown belt · Master 3 · 2026

As a registered massage therapist and a martial artist, growing and constantly learning is part of both practices. This principle enabled her to push herself even further, taking up long-distance racing and earning first- and second-place finishes in 2014. First competing at almost 30 years of age, Christine proves it doesn’t matter what age you start—just begin.

Greg Turner

Purple belt helping beginners feel comfortable, supported and confident on the mats.

Greg knows firsthand that simply getting to class can be one of the biggest challenges when starting Jiu-Jitsu. Although his technical skills developed quickly, nerves and anxiety often made showing up a battle. He kept coming back, and over time, those feelings eased as his confidence grew and he became an important part of The Fort community.

Today, that experience gives Greg a personal connection to the beginners he coaches. As lead coach of our Sunday Basics program, he is passionate about helping students build strong fundamentals while feeling comfortable, supported, and welcome on the mats. Greg understands the uncertainty of being new, and his goal is to help others find their confidence earlier in their own journey.
