Our Marcelo Garcia Association

A direct connection to one of Jiu-Jitsu’s great competitors and teachers. We travel to learn, bring those lessons home and keep growing together.

MEET MARCELO

The athlete. The teacher.

Marcelo Garcia is one of the most influential competitors in Jiu-Jitsu. Born in Minas Gerais, Brazil, he became a leading figure in both Gi and No-Gi grappling, earning world titles while helping shape the way generations of athletes train.

His butterfly guard, arm drags, back takes and guillotine chokes have become part of the sport’s shared language. Beyond competition, he is known for detailed instruction, a friendly approach and a commitment to helping others learn.

WHY WE ARE AFFILIATED

Keep learning.
Bring it home.

We chose the Marcelo Garcia Jiu-Jitsu Association because his approach reflects what we want to build at The Fort: strong fundamentals, thoughtful technical detail and respect for the people we train with. His example shows how skill and understanding can overcome size, and how demanding training can go hand in hand with a welcoming atmosphere.

Training with Marcelo helps us keep developing as coaches. We bring those lessons back to Fort McMurray, using them to help students build a foundation, work through challenges and deepen their understanding of Jiu-Jitsu.

Our connection is personal, too. Tristan received his black belt from Marcelo in New York in November 2022. The Fort is listed in Marcelo’s official association directory, with Scott Campbell and Tristan Parker as its head instructors.

LEARNING TOGETHER

From New York to Hawaii.

Our visits are a chance to train, ask questions and strengthen the relationships behind our association.

THE FORT IN HAWAII

A team trip. A shared experience.

Our team travelled to Hawaii to train with Marcelo at his academy in Kailua. Learning together, sharing the mats and spending time as a team made the trip part of our story at The Fort. It is one of the ways we build our connection with Marcelo and bring that experience home to Fort McMurray.
